State Reactivation Services
Regulatory laws in some states require individuals who have been absent from practice for a specified time to retake the NBCOT certification examination. Since its inception, NBCOT has worked closely with state agencies to administer reactivation tests to OTR and COTA certificants.
Retaking the exam solely for state purposes does not affect the individual's original NBCOT certification status. In these cases, individuals must be approved for eligibility by the state regulatory board prior to sitting for the exam.
- Certificants should first contact their state agency to determine its requirements for obtaining a license or limited permit to practice in that jurisdiction.
- Currently, Alabama, Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and Washington require the NBCOT examination as part of their reactivation process.
For certificants who are required by the state to examine for state reactivation purposes, the regulatory board must submit the form below.

Once NBCOT receives the Eligiblity Application from the state board, the certificant will be instructed to download the State Reactivation Handbook and complete the paper application.
