Manual Edema Mobilization for the Lower Extremity

This workshop will teach the lymphatic decongestion technique of Manual Edema Mobilization (MEM) specifically to decrease persistent lower extremity sub acute edema found in post orthopedic surgical and tissue trauma pathologies, wound healing, cellulitis, venous insufficiency induced lymphedema and edema form total hip and knee arthroplasty surgeries. The MEM technique is a short 20 minute treatment that can be incorporated into a regular treatment and home program. Topics to be covered include: anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system related to edema, distinguishing types of edema, a basic Lower Extremity MEM Pump Point treatment program, a MEM patient self management home program, a simplified patient lower extremity self bandaging program, application of MEM to specific diagnoses including problem solving rationale and research discussion. Therapists will be required to do pre-course reading about the lymphatic system.
