This course discusses the historical perspective of pain management from ancient to modern times including cognitive, psychological and emotional factors that must be considered in pain management. It explains the differences between acute, subacute, recurrent acute, and chronic pain as well as interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary pain management approaches. It indicates how to develop goal-setting and treatment planning objectives and become conversant with the concept of patient responsibility in pain management problem solutions. The course includes social support issues relevant to pain management and demonstrates an understanding of the coping skills necessary in management of chronic pain.
