This course defines and identifies the prevalence of phobic disorders. The author differentiates between agoraphobia, social phobia, and specific phobia. DSM IV - TR diagnostic criteria is used to identify phobic disorders in case scenarios. Physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual dimensions are listed in the assessment of clinical symptoms. Several etiologies of phobic disorders are discussed with emphasis placed on four major theories. Medical treatments such as behavioral therapy, cognitive - behavioral therapy, as well as psychotherapy are described. Medications and medication management are addressed. The importance of teaching client/family coping skills in a healthy and encouraging manor is emphasized.
