This course provides a basis for understanding this genetic disorder of hemoglobin that affects mainly people of African, middle Mediterranean, Arabian, East Indian, Caribbean, South American and Hispanic descent. The course includes background material about the genetic factors, diagnosis, treatment, and living with chronic pain. The role of the social worker in helping individuals and families cope with this disorder is emphasized.
