The student will learn about the purpose and basic provisions of the new HIPPA laws. The concept of Protected Health Information (PHI) will be discussed, as well as identification of other sensitive and confidential information. Specific examples are given that will illustrate when PHI can legally be used, and what actions are not in compliance with HIPAA. The legal penalties for non-compliance are also discussed.
