Instructor's Name: Mark Nash

Patients undergoing physical and occupational therapies routinely take prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications. These drugs and medications influence how and whether patients benefits from therapy programs. Thus, therapist knowledge of drug administration, actions, and adverse events increases the likelihood that safe and effective rehabilitation outcomes will be achieved. This course will examine prescription and non-prescription medicines commonly used in medical practice and rehabilitation for a variety of illnesses, diseases, and disabilities. It will begin with foundational information examining how drugs are commonly administered, taken up, metabolized, and eliminated from the body. Course sections then focus on body systems that are treated with common pharmaceuticals and over-the-counter (OTC) medications. These sections will examine methods of drug and medication action, key adverse effects, and influences on patients undergoing physical and occupational therapy. Discussion of common drug interactions, optimal drug administration, and patient errors in drug administration will accompany each section. The course concludes with presentation and discussion of common OTC drugs, herbals, and neutraceuticals focusing on their hazards and interactions with prescription drugs.
