Falls continue to be a common problem for hospital patients and nursing home residents. As of Oct 2008, CMS announced that Medicare will no longer pay for the extra cost of preventable injuries resulting from falls in acute care hospitals. Fall prevention is a multidisciplinary problem. Rehab therapists are frequently called upon to either assess for fall risk, correct an underlying problem, or serve on a committee to prevent falls. In this course the therapist will learn: consequences of falls, causes of falls, how to assess the likelihood of a patient falling, how to reduce fall risk, how to assess environments and make modifications, how to reduce mechanical and chemical restraints, and the latest evidence regarding use of bed rails, low beds, alarm systems, and hip protectors. Case studies, Q & A’s, and evidence based practice are included in this updated 4th edition by well known fall expert Rein Tideiksaar. This course is a must for any therapist who works with geriatrics.
