Resistance Training for the Older Adult (#212)

See all courses from OTcourses.com

Instructor's Name: Wendy K. Anamaet and Michelle E. Moffa-Trotter

We are therapists and exercise is our specialty area. As therapists, we should not be prescribing exercise without sound rationale to support every aspect of our prescription. While other wellness providers (fitness instructors, athletic trainers, etc) may be able to perform these activities in the absence of pathology, the expertise of therapists is necessary to address the special needs of older individuals or individuals with pathology to ensure safety and effectiveness. This course discusses the principles and parameters of resistance training; how to accurately assess muscle performance; how to prescribe resistance training exercises in order to increase strength, power, endurance, and hypertrophy; how to accurately prescribe a specific exercise program based on the assessment using the most up to date evidence available. This is a valuable course for both PT's and OT's who desire to safely and effectively increase muscle performance in their patients while effectively improving function in the shortest time available.
