Online/Printable/Mailed - 10 Contact Hours - Description: This entry-level course for occupational and physical therapists and assistants as well as speech pathologists takes a comprehensive look at user input devices (ex. adpated keyboards, mouses, switches, joystick controls, etc.) to enable individuals living with a disability to interact their environment through cell phones, computers, and mobility devices. The first section discusses the possible movements that can be used to control an assistivce device or mainstream technology electronic device, and the most common ways of accomodating for lack of motor control. The second section looks at the characteristics that make control interfaces useful and provides options for control interfaces for both direct and indirect selection. The last section looks specifically at computer access and how one can be adapted to meet the needs of individuals living with a disability.
