Patients, in each setting, are sicker than ever before. This requires that therapists in settings, where patients were traditionally considered “stable,” now be aware of acute comorbidities, precautions and contraindications, as well as to make decisions quickly and independently to preserve the patient’s safety and help them reach their full potential. This course delivers clinically relevant and immediately applicable knowledge to inform such decisions for practitioners in any setting, from acute care to rehab, outpatient or home care. Through lecture, case discussion and small group labs, participants will review cardiovascular anatomy and physiology with a clinical background. A key focus will be on medical and surgical issues that impact the patient’s examination, evaluation and interventions, as well as the patient’s prognosis and outcomes. Through case analysis and clinical problem-solving participants will be given an opportunity to decide which impairments are significant and how they can alter their interventions to take the dysfunction into consideration. Clinical monitoring and parameters for safe exercise given a cardiac impairment will be explored.
