This advanced course will focus on clinical decision-making for medically and developmentally complex patients in the NICU and transition to home and EI. Emphasis will be on in-depth knowledge of pathophysiology of common NICU diagnoses and special populations; choice and administration of evaluation tools and evidence-based therapeutic interventions, implementing developmentally supportive oral feeding interventions, and transition to post-NICU care. The course format will include labs and video case studies to allow attendees to integrate course material.
Upon completion of the course the participants will be able to:
• Discuss the pathophysiology of common NICU diagnoses.
• Assess and interpret neuromotor function and neurobehaviors using a variety of neonatal assessment tools.
• Describe evidence-based interventions in the NICU and identify implementation opportunities and barriers.
• Design a developmentally supportive, comprehensive oral feeding assessment and plan of care for medically fragile infants.
• Describe models of care to assure appropriate follow-up services for high-risk infants.
