Boosting Your Disability IQ - Pt. 4

See all courses from Dynamic Learning Online, Inc.

Instructor's Name: Shelly L. Beaver, MS, CTRS

The definitions of and concepts associated with the term disability can dramatically vary throughout different cultures across the globe. As a result, individual beliefs related to the perceived causes of disabling conditions, appropriate treatment options and or social implications of disability may differ cross-culturally as well. Such individual perceptions can dramatically affect if, when and how individuals with disabilities seek health services and how well they adjust to the onset of disability. To ensure the appropriate and responsible provision of health services to individuals with differing cultural perspectives, practitioners must understand cultural variations in beliefs and behaviors related to disability. This interactive online continuing education course prepares the beginner, intermediate and advanced health care professional/paraprofessional to successfully provide culturally competent disability-related services to clients from culturally diverse backgrounds. Through an in-depth review of various cultural perspectives of disability and a thorough discussion of culturally competent practice techniques, professionals will gain knowledge, insight and confidence in treating and meeting the needs of a diverse clientele.
