The definitions of and concepts associated with the term disability can dramatically vary throughout different cultures across the globe. As a result, individual beliefs related to the perceived causes of disabling conditions, appropriate treatment options and or social implications of disability may differ cross-culturally as well. Such individual perceptions can dramatically affect if, when and how individuals with disabilities seek health services and how well they adjust to the onset of disability. To ensure the appropriate and responsible provision of health services to individuals with differing cultural perspectives, practitioners must understand cultural variations in beliefs and behaviors related to disability.
