CORE STABILIZATION FACILITATION AND TRAINING TECHNIQUES

Almost everyone will experience neck or back pain at some point in their lives. Treating neck and back pain resulting from postural stress and instability requires a multifaceted approach. We live in a dynamic environment and it is critical that we function in this environment in an effective and efficient manner. As clinicians we must appreciate and consider the importance of integrating mobility and stability principles when treating this population. The axial spine is the center of human movement and has considerable influence on the functioning of both the upper and lower extremities. This course takes an in depth look at the two most critical components of human movement which include mobility and stability. Mobility in this context is concerned with how people move and how movement impairments may influence functional patterns. The other component of axial function is stability. This concept refers to muscular control, strength and endurance surrounding the axial spine, which facilitates functional power in a dynamic environment. This hands on intensive course will teach you to properly assess impaired movement patterns followed by treatment concepts focusing on corrective strategies and other facilitation techniques to enhance the quality of movement. These concepts are then integrated into a practical context so the attendee can quickly incorporate them into a treatment plan designed for a diverse patient population. Upon conclusion of the course participants will have a solid understanding of how axial movement influences functional abilities along with corrective strategies, which can improve outcomes.

SPLINTING THE HAND, WRIST, AND ELBOW

The art of custom splinting is an often frustrating and challenging skill to master. Invariably we find our best efforts in a pile of very expensive and awkward to handle mass of materials leaving both our patients and ourselves baffled by the outcome. Taking control of the materials through understanding their properties, characteristics and “feel”, along with a strong foundation of upper extremity biomechanics and surface anatomy can quickly turn the tables in your favor. Holding true to the title, these clinicians have created a remarkable formula for mastering splint fabrication in an introductory environment that incorporates ample opportunity to both observe and fabricate custom splinting, all the while, sharing the dos and don’ts that can only come from 20 years of trial and error. A fun, relaxed and non-intimidating workshop developed to replace frustrated and baffled with enlightened and confident. Diagnosis and conditions covered in this workshop include fractures, arthritis, contractures, CTDs and wounds. Emphasis is placed on replicating the actual patient environment. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS OF THE UPPER QUADRANT

Direct access now demands that clinicians understand and master the art of differential diagnosis as it relates to both neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunctions and co-morbidities. Physical examination and treatment of the upper quadrant requires a thorough understanding of the pathomechanics of the shoulder complex, cervico-thoracic complex and upper ribs. Upper quadrant dysfunction in any of these specified regions can influence pain, posture and motion of the entire core and peripheral joints. Therefore, clinicians need to possess a solid skill set utilizing evidence-based examination, diagnosis and intervention strategies to manage both primary and secondary disorders in this region. This course will combine an efficient examination process with evidence based screening principles in order to identify and sequence a custom treatment plan tailored to the dysfunction.

Common pathologies, mechanisms of injury, and progressive pre and post-operative treatment involving fractures, RSI/CTDs, tendon/nerve lacerations, arthritis, sprains/strains and dislocations will be covered with strong reference to their impact on function. Course content includes medical screening, differential diagnosis, imaging, functional progression of treatment, splinting/casting, PAMs, pain management and the non-compliant patient. This seminar will NOT present a “protocol driven approach” to rehabilitation. Rather, the participant will learn a “framework” for physical examination that will permit rapid synthesis of findings into a “dynamic treatment plan” designed to increase patient satisfaction and outcomes.

THE CERVICOTHORACIC COMPLEX

Neck pain is present in a large portion of the population. Treatment of these patients can often be difficult, particularly when specific causative structures cannot clearly be defined. Attempting to treat neck pain without an attempt to classify the patient can lead to inconsistent outcomes and frustration for both the patient and clinician. Guiding strategies can help improve patient outcomes and lead the clinician based on the most appropriate evidence-based interventions. This seminar will help clinicians identify common problems associated with neck pain as well as appropriate treatments. Evaluation procedures will also be introduced to group patients in treatment categories. This classification system will assist the clinician in determining which patients will most benefit from specific treatment interventions and improve outcomes. Finally, eclectic treatment interventions will be covered including stabilization, manual techniques, and pain management strategies. Corrective home exercises will also be reviewed. Participants will walk away with practical and useful treatment techniques that can be implemented with their patients the very next day.

Course handouts and labs are designed to allow immediate clinical application of splinting techniques.
