What is CranioSacral Therapy?

"What is CranioSacral Therapy?”, is a Seminar-On-Demand presented by By Melinda Roland, MA, PT, Lac, OMD. This course details the history of the development of CranioSacral Therapy by Dr. John E. Upledger. It discusses the physiology and anatomy of the craniosacral system, its function in health, and its relationship to disease process. Lastly current research is discussed to show the clinical significance of CranioSacral Therapy. In the mid 1970s, the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State University brought together a team of researchers led by Dr. John E. Upledger. The major premise involved the movement of cranial bones. It was here that Dr. Upledger integrated the role of the craniosacral dura mater and cerebrospinal fluid into a comprehensive model of the CranioSacral System. He called it the “Pressurestat Model.’ It is this central role of the dural membranes in the evaluation and treatment of the CranioSacral System that differentiates CranioSacral Therapy, as developed by Upledger from other cranial techniques. New Ways to Communicate with your Young Client

During this Seminar-On-Demand the clinician will learn how to increase understanding of children's negative feelings. Adina discusses six tools to help accept, manage, and empathize with children's negative feelings in a therapy setting.Praise is probably the single most effective way to encourage, motivate and increase repeat positive behavior in children. Praise also increases self-esteem. Children with developmental disabilities - including communication disorders - are at risk for low self-esteem, and one of our responsibilities as clinicians is to ensure that the client will have a more positive view of self. Using praise effectively is one way to achieve that goal. Muscle Energy Technique (MET) & Proprioceptive Neuromuscular

Muscle Energy Technique (MET) & Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Re-education (PNF) Muscle Energy Technique (MET)/ Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Re-education (PNF) is an evidence-based intervention for correcting somatic dysfunctions which contribute to pain, limited mobility, muscle weakness and disability. Dr. Fred Mitchell Sr., DO developed MET in 1948 to restore proper biomechanics and functional movement. Precise active muscle contractions and positions are used to normalize tension and restore functional motion. Knott and Voss introduced their version of a related technique, PNF, at the same time. Both MET and PNF are used to re-educate abnormal neuromotor reflexes, facilitate normal muscle action and inhibit hypertonicity. This hands-on guided exercise is gentle enough to apply without the need for forceful manipulation procedures. MET/PNF may be incorporated clinically and in home exercise programs to improve mobility and promote functional outcomes. Lecture, discussion and hands-on video demonstration are presented to show how this valuable intervention can make a difference in your practice. This Seminar-On-Demand is offered is 4 contact hours in length (check your state's approval status in the state specific course catalog for your profession).

Current Topics in Dysphagia Management

Effective dysphagia management involves consideration of a number of factors that may potentially impact safe and efficient swallowing. Recommendations regarding diet, therapeutic techniques, or non-oral feeding can have implications well beyond the swallow system they are designed to impact. Dysphagia clinicians are faced with large amounts of information from a variety of sources, some of it conflicting, as we struggle to provide our clients with the best advice and counsel. This course reviews the available evidence in a number of areas of dysphagia management including use of thick liquids, exercise and electrical stimulation, oral hygiene, and risk factors for aspiration pneumonia to assist clinicians in decision-making. Normal swallow characteristics, which are sometimes misdiagnosed as dysphagia including prolonged dwell times and laryngeal penetration were discussed. Ethical considerations impacting dysphagia management including patient compliance and end-of-life issues will also be reviewed. Advanced Soft Tissue Approaches For The Neck

Whether your patients are suffering from acute or chronic pain, craniosacral therapy can help. Craniosacral therapy uses very light pressure to detect restrictions and restore balance to the craniosacral system. The craniosacral system is made up of the dural membrane that covers the brain & spinal cord and the cerebrospinal fluid contained inside. It has been described as the deepest layer of the fascia. Like fascia, restrictions in the craniosacral system can cause pain and dysfunction and compromise the performance of the musculoskeletal and neurological systems surrounding it. Craniosacral therapy is an effective treatment modality for head, neck & back pain, including post-concussion syndrome, migraines & headaches, acute & chronic neck & back pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction and much more.
