Terminology related to several mental health disorders, including autism-related disorders, will change with the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) in late May 2013. Occupational Therapist Registered OTR and Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants COTA certification examinations administered for the remainder of 2013 will continue to use language from the DSM-IV. Language and terms used in certification examination items will begin to transition to DSM-5 terminology as academic programs have the opportunity to incorporate the new language into their occupational therapy curricula.
