FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT CERTIFICATION RENEWAL

1) Question: How do I convert the CEU I recently earned into PDU?
Answer: 1 CEU = 10 clock hours. If you have completed activities relating to 6, 7, and 10 on the PDU chart, you can convert 1 clock hour into 1 PDU. See page 12 for details.

2) Question: Do I have to send in my PDU verification documentation at the time of submitting my renewal application?
Answer: If you are submitting a renewal application on time or from April 1 through December 31 of your scheduled renewal year, you do NOT have to submit PDU verification documentation unless requested to do so by NBCOT.

3) Question: I am over a year past due in renewing my certification, what do I need to do?
Answer: Certificants submitting a past due renewal application by one (1) or more years are required to submit verification of the PDU documentation. See pages for 14-17 details.

4) Question: To verify that I have completed an academic course of study for PDU purposes, can I submit an unofficial transcript?
Answer: No, if you are submitting verification documentation for completing a course of academic study for PDU, you MUST arrange for an official transcript to be submitted. See pages 14-15 for details.

5) Question: My name has changed since my last certification, how will this impact my renewal application?
Answer: You should complete steps for processing a name change as listed on the renewal application. For details see page 8.

6) Question: I am due to renew my certification now, but I don’t have enough PDU. What should I do?
Answer: You cannot renew your certification unless you have accrued 36 PDU within the 3 years from the date you intend to renew.

7) Question: What if I’ve accrued more than 36 PDU since my last certification, should I list all the activities I’ve completed on the application?
Answer: You are only required to list 36 PDU on your application.

8) Question: I moved to a new residence and didn’t receive the renewal reminder notices, how can I apply to have the late fee waived?
Answer: It is the certificant’s responsibility to know their certification renewal date. Failure to receive renewal notices or not knowing your certification renewal date is not grounds for applying for late fee waiver. Additionally, it is the certificant’s responsibility to notify NBCOT of their change of address within 30 days after the change becomes effective (see Attestation Statement, page 9).

9) Question: I’ve had a really heavy workload and haven’t been able to attend any courses – and don’t have the
36 PDU. What can I do?
Answer: You should not submit a renewal application until you have accrued 36 PDU. Refer to the PDU chart (pages 14-17) for details of the 27 different ways you can accrue PDU. Attending traditional courses and workshops are only some of the ways to accrue PDU.

10) Question: I have supervised 8 level I fieldwork students during my renewal cycle, each for 2 weeks at a time. How many PDU can I claim for this?
Answer: Eight (8) - For Level I supervision, you can claim 1 PDU per each student that you supervised regardless of the number of hours supervision was provided.

11) Question: We regularly hold employer in-services for our staff, what kind of documentation should we keep for PDU purposes?
Answer: Sign in sheet with – date, time, title of in-service with presenter, and outline of the training.

12) Question: Can I submit my Professional Development Log as documentation for my professional development activities?
Answer: Logs such as the log for volunteer services, log for journal/textbook readings and the professional development log are designed to assist you in keeping track of your professional development activities. Refer to the PDU Activities Chart on pages 14-17 for required verification documentation.

13) Question: I am planning to take a leave of absence in order to fulfill family obligations. How will this affect my certification status?
Answer: Follow the instructions for "Non Renewed" individuals as shown on page 6. Take note of the updated renewal cycle requirements if you plan to return to practice after having missed one or more renewal cycles. You may find the examples listed on page 7 helpful in determining your renewal requirements upon returning to practice.

14) Question: I am currently living overseas - how can I obtain PDU for my NBCOT renewal next year? 
 Answer: PDU accrued outside of the US can still count towards certification renewal as long as it meets the criteria for one of the 27 PDU categories described in the PDU chart.  Note - if verification documentation is required by NBCOT in order to process your renewal, the documentation MUST be written in English or be accompanied by a translated version of the document.

15) Question: Is there a difference in the amount of PDU and fee an OTR and COTA have to pay for renewing their certification?
Answer: No - the fee for renewing certification is $65 regardless of the credential.
 

16) Question: I only work 10 hours a week; do I still have to accrue 36 PDU for renewal?
Answer: Yes - in order to be eligible for renewal, the certificant must accrue 36 PDU.

17) Question: I have dual certification, when should I renew both credentials?
Answer: To renew both credentials, you should renew your certification on the renewal date of the OTR credential.
